Project tracking: what going on

There are 4 components to effective task management: cost, schedule, duration and quality. A bit more challenging objective is to optimize work processes and resource attribution. The majority of tasks employ such components as labour, money, and tools to deliver results and hit selected targets. To work with projects effectively you should work on quite a few things. A couple of them are listed below:
- Task setting and assessing achievement.
- Managing risk. Most feature a this or that degree of uncertainty.
- Assigning and managing resources.
- Understanding the product you want to have on completion of the project.
- Managing what is happening: giving out jobs, supervising execution.
- Managing quality.
- Managing changes. Change happens. When you begin the project, you have to anticipate how it will develop with time.
- Communicating with sponsors and participants of the project.
To manage these components you can employ pen and paper or probably MS EXCEL. However, specialized project tracking software has a number of relevant advantages:
- It makes scheduling easy. A program will automate scheduling adjustments. Each resource can have their own time-table. It just as well makes it simpler to track the work-in-progress on different jobs.
- Working with several projects and managing a number of requirements. Project management software allows project managers to seea larger picture and aggregate data on a number of projects.
- Critical path is easy to detect. The critical path of a project consists of jobs that directly influence the actual duration of the project. If a task on the critical path takes longer than expected, dates of work on other tasks will be changed. Whereas other activities that are not on the critical path may last longer or shorter without changing the duration of other activities in this project.
- Distributing data among the team members. The more complicated are the project needs, the more of them have to be discussed. Groupware productivity tracking software allows each participant to know what is up every time.
Is it always necessary to employ task tracking software?
Like any software solution, project tracking software has its limitation. It produces the best value when used for a number of large projects. It could be a good idea to operate smaller projects by hand, so that there is no need to deal with big overhead associated with employing complicated programs.
